What it does
- Provides separate action servers for path planning, control, and recovery so external deliberation software can coordinate navigation.
- Its interfaces do not depend on one map representation, so 2D costmaps, meshes, or voxel grids can be used.
- Multiple planners, controllers, and recovery behaviors can be loaded at once, selected at runtime, or run in parallel.
- Actions expose detailed feedback, results, and error codes to support debugging and supervision.
- Originally a ROS 1 replacement for move_base; the ROS 2 version targets the humble distribution with most core packages ported.
- The 2D costmap packages (mbf_costmap_core and mbf_costmap_nav) were not yet migrated to ROS 2.
