What it does

  • Encodes point clouds channel by channel, then compresses the result with LZ4 or ZSTD.
  • Floating point channels such as X, Y and Z are quantized with a user-given resolution, which makes them lossy.
  • RGBA and integer channels, including packed colors named rgb or rgba, are stored losslessly.
  • Main uses are reducing the size of datasets such as rosbags and lowering bandwidth when streaming point clouds.
  • Includes ROS 2 tools: a point_cloud_transport plugin, a topic converter and a rosbag converter for MCAP files.
  • Also builds to WebAssembly for the Foxglove extension and a Python decoder, and offers a benchmark tool for measuring ratio and speed on your own data.
